The Chicago Cubs faced a tough start to their away series against the Milwaukee Brewers on May 27th, 2024, as they fell short in a 1-5 loss in 9 innings, marking the beginning of the series with a 0-1 record.
Game Recap
The Cubs' lone run came in the top of the 9th inning when Seiya Suzuki scored from 3rd base off Patrick Wisdom's sacrifice fly to center fielder Sal Frelick. However, it was not enough to overcome the Brewers' strong performance.
The Brewers dominated the scoring, starting with a decisive 4-run rally in the bottom of the 8th inning. Sal Frelick scored from 2nd base off William Contreras' hit to a force out, where a fielding error by third baseman Nick Madrigal contributed to the run. Brice Turang and Contreras both scored off Willy Adames' powerful home run to center field. Joey Ortiz added to the Brewers' lead by scoring from 1st base off Jackson Chourio's double to center fielder Cody Bellinger.
Pitching Battles
The Cubs' pitching efforts were led by Justin Steele, who pitched from the 1st to the 7th innings, followed by Mark Leiter and Hayden Wesneski, who shared the 8th inning on the mound. On the Brewers' side, Robert Gasser pitched from the 1st to part of the 7th innings, Bryan Hudson took over for part of the 7th inning and all of the 8th inning, and Hoby Milner closed out the game in the 9th inning.
Cubs Aim to Bounce Back
Despite the challenging start, the Cubs remain focused on turning their fortunes around in the remainder of the series against the Brewers. With their sights set on regrouping and refining their strategies, the Cubs will look to bounce back in the upcoming games and showcase their resilience on the field.
