Cubs Fall Short in Series Opener Against Reds: A 4-5 Heartbreaker



In a thrilling series opener on May 31, 2024, the Chicago Cubs narrowly lost to the Cincinnati Reds, 4-5, in a game that showcased intense competition and dramatic moments. This loss put the Cubs behind 0-1 in the three-game series against their division rivals.


Early Fireworks: Happ's Home Run

The Cubs started strong in the bottom of the 2nd inning. Christopher Morel reached first base and was promptly driven home by Ian Happ's powerful home run to left-center field, giving the Cubs an early 2-0 lead. The energy at Wrigley Field was electric as the home crowd celebrated the early advantage.


Reds' Response: Steer's and Martini's Clutch Hits

The Reds, however, responded in the top of the 4th inning. Spencer Steer scored from 2nd base off Tyler Stephenson's single to right field. Then, Jake Fraley tied the game by scoring from 2nd base off Nick Martini's single to center field. The Reds' timely hitting showcased their determination to fight back and keep the game competitive.


Espinal's Game-Changer

The game took a significant turn in the top of the 7th inning when Jonathan India reached first base and Santiago Espinal hit a two-run home run to left-center field, putting the Reds ahead 4-2. This clutch hit by Espinal shifted the momentum in favor of the Reds and put the Cubs on the defensive.


Cubs' Rally Falls Short

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Cubs capitalized on a bases-loaded situation when Yan Gomes scored from 3rd base off Ian Happ's walk, closing the gap to 4-3. The Cubs continued to battle, and in the bottom of the 9th inning, Pete Crow-Armstrong scored from 3rd base off Seiya Suzuki's double, tying the game at 4-4. The Wrigley Field crowd was on its feet, hopeful for a comeback victory.


However, in the top of the 9th inning, the Reds pulled ahead once again. Jacob Hurtubise scored from 3rd base off TJ Friedl's single on a ground ball to left fielder Ian Happ, giving the Reds a 5-4 lead. Despite the Cubs' valiant efforts in the bottom half of the inning, they were unable to score, resulting in a narrow defeat.


Pitching Performances

Javier Assad started on the mound for the Cubs, pitching effectively through the first 5 innings. Drew Smyly, Tyson Miller, and Hector Neris followed, each battling to keep the Cubs in the game. The Reds countered with Graham Ashcraft, who pitched into the 5th inning, supported by Fernando Cruz, Sam Moll, Lucas Sims, and Alexis Diaz, who successfully closed out the game.


Cubs Aim to Bounce Back

With the first game of the series behind them, the Cubs will need to regroup and strategize for the next two games against the Reds. Despite the loss, the Cubs demonstrated resilience and the ability to respond under pressure, which they can build upon in the upcoming matchups.
