Chicago Sky Secure First Home Win with 83-73 Victory Over L.A. Sparks



In an electrifying game on May 30, 2024, the Chicago Sky triumphed over the Los Angeles Sparks with a final score of 83-73, marking their first home win of the season. The Sky showcased their determination and resilience, leading three out of four quarters to secure the victory.


First Half Dominance

The Sky came out strong in the first quarter, establishing a solid lead with a score of 26-15. Marina Mabrey led the charge, scoring 20 points and tying a career-high with six 3-pointers. Elizabeth Williams added to the team's momentum with 17 points, 11 rebounds, and four blocks. By halftime, the Sky had extended their lead to 49-31, thanks to Dana Evans' 11 points and Chennedy Carter's 10 points.

Third Quarter Struggles

Despite the commanding lead, the Sky faced challenges in the third quarter. The Sparks mounted a comeback, reducing the deficit with a 20-8 run that closed the quarter at 67-58. The Sky committed 10 fouls and six turnovers during this period, allowing the Sparks to score 27 points and tighten the game.


Los Angeles was within 78-69 with 2:16 left after Rickea Jackson completed a three-point play, but rookie Angel Reese made a shot in the lane on back-to-back possessions to extend Chicago's lead to 82-69.


Strong Finish

The Sky held their ground in the final quarter, maintaining their lead despite the Sparks' persistent efforts. Rookie Angel Reese made crucial plays, scoring in the lane on consecutive possessions to solidify the Sky's victory. Dana Evans was instrumental on defense with four of the Sky's 13 steals, contributing 15 points. Chennedy Carter added 14 points to round out the team's top scorers.


Los Angeles was slowed by 18 turnovers.


Sky's Balanced Attack

In addition to Mabrey and Williams' standout performances, the Sky saw significant contributions from across the roster. Reese finished with six points and six rebounds, despite picking up her fifth foul early in the fourth quarter. The team's balanced attack and solid defense were key factors in their win.


Dearica Hamby had 24 points and 13 rebounds, and Kia Nurse added 17 points for Los Angeles (2-5). Jackson finished with 10 points and rookie Cameron Brink had seven points and six rebounds in 22 minutes.
